How It Works
The Ability Through Education Scholarship Program focuses on the progenitors of future extraordinary contributions for people who have a disability. The Ability Through Education Scholarship Program directly enables the two key elements of learning-knowledge and experience.
Knowledge
The objective of the scholarship program is to provide exceptional students with the opportunity to study at the most outstanding universities, colleges and institutions and then provide them with the opportunity and incentive to apply their excellent academic accomplishments towards working to improve the lives of people who have a disability.
Scholarships are awarded to offset qualified educational expenses for students who have distinguished themselves academically and who are or will be enrolled full-time in an accredited institution pursuing a degree directly related to improving the lives of people who have a disability.
The scholarship awards provide for qualified educational expenses including tuition and fees and course-related costs such as books, supplies, and equipment. Additional loan, grant and fellowship programs will be developed as funding permits to encourage students and advanced scholars who have committed themselves to an academic or professional discipline that improves the lives of people who have a disability.
Experience
The World Ability Federation works with organizations and corporations that create products or services that improve the lives of people with disabilities. Each summer, these organizations will offer intern and mentoring programs designed to help the scholarship winners obtain practical experience within their chosen field of study.
Following graduation, students will have the opportunity to work with one of these organizations within an area that their academic studies and summer internships have prepared them. For every year they remain a full-time employee of the organization working in a position that directly improves the lives of people with disabilities, one year of the student loan will be forgiven.
Outcomes
This program will encourage students to remain dedicated to a career helping people with disabilities for the years it takes to forgive their loan and hopefully far beyond. By enabling the brightest students to attend the best academic institutions and to receive mentoring that will allow them to apply their knowledge and experience directly in an area that affects people with disabilities. This will directly affect our industry by ensuring the development of outstanding contributions in innovative programs, inventions and solutions that will help millions of people worldwide.
