About the Trophy

Each of the World Ability Award trophies is handcrafted by conceptual structuralist, Robert Sadlemire.  Each trophy was designed to be unique despite having a similar structure and design...like human beings.

ROBERT SADLEMIRE

Born in Troy, New York in 1960. As a child Robert's natural curiosity involving mechanical objects, led to his building a robot at the age of five. From that point on his love of mechanical endeavors grew into a passion, along with his love for art.

During his college years, he searched for different institutions that would encourage his distinctive artistic talents, but too few were able to understand his genius, or more importantly, the passion. Thus, he embarked on his dream and his ambition, which was to create kinetic motion sculptures, and rotary oscillating motors, capable of taking him to another level and inspiring his work with steel and aluminum.

Finding a workshop and gallery proved to be a challenge, until he traveled to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in 1993 and found the perfect studio, waiting for him. Intent upon leaving the Troy, New York winters, Myrtle Beach seem to be the ideal spot for his inventions and artistic endeavors, in a made-to-order studio.

Through eight years of trial and error Robert has been able to not only bend steel but to curl it, weave it, smooth it---which proved to be a very emotional process. Thus, entered the beauty of his art.

Throughout the years, since 1993, living in Myrtle Beach has proved to be an area conducive to his art and adventures, adventures into realms of creativity.
Being a integral part of the community in which he lives, Robert has donated his time and energies to reach high school children who have desires to fulfill artistic abilities through various art forms. Robert gives them an introduction to steel fabrication and welding, and then they are left, unrestricted, to create any object of art with aluminum and steel, all produced within the confines of his workshop.
