David Bigoney, cDifferent Foundation

Dave BigoneyDave Bigoney’s life serves as the classic example of focusing on “ability” not disability.

Dave Bigoney earned his Eagle Scout award in 1991, and then dedicated the next four years to the United States Navy.  Dave excelled in mountain climbing, wind surfing, sailing, scuba diving, biking, and running.

In 1996, while visiting his father and his wife of about 5 years, Dave was caught in a domestic dispute between them, which resulted in his father being killed, his step-mother committing suicide, and David being shot in the head leaving him completely blind.

Dave decided to re-acclimate himself to the physical fitness side of life which was his passion prior to becoming blind.  With the support of his wife, family, friends, and the community, Dave completed his first triathlon which he found could challenge him both physically and mentally.

Dave has since qualified and competed at both the 2001 and 2003 International Triathlon Union World Championship placing 2nd and 4th in the physically challenged blind category.  David was recently invited to throw out the ceremonial first pitch during World Ability Day at U.S. Cellular Field in May 2005.

Dave has agreed to serve on the World Ability Federation Board of Advisors to offer his unique perspective to the WAF programs and initiatives.
